Network Monitoring

Powerful & Versatile Network Monitoring Appliance for Your Remote Site

Today, IP networking has become the nervous system of most organizations, including at remote sites. Davicom’s Cortex units can monitor the health of your on-site IP LAN to ensure everything is interconnected and communicating as it should be. The Cortex’s built-in Pings can check on the network status of connected devices as well as validate that remote WAN backhaul connections are operating correctly. By strategically addressing different Ping commands, the Cortex unit can analyze and determine which specific network branch or device is down. It can then use its virtual logic and built-in relays, or SNMP SET commands to individually, and automatically, reset site equipment, routers, switches or gateways.

Incorporating its own 4-port network switch, the Cortex360 can easily connect to other IP devices, and keep these connections alive with its 12VDC supply, should the site’s main utility power fail.

USEFUL FEATURE

NETWORK
PINGS

The Cortex’s network Ping function performs an ICMP Echo request to a specific IP address. Local LAN addresses as well as remote WAN addresses can be checked for connectivity. If the ping reply is not received, the corresponding Ping Flag is raised and an automatic action or alarm can be programmed. These actions can be, for example, to power-cycle specific routers or switches in order to get them back on line. So if a site backhaul fails, the Cortex will try to restore the connection from the remote end, while you are trying the same thing from your end of the link.

Besides ensuring that network issues are resolved quickly and automatically, ping commands can sometimes be used to keep specific devices from going into « sleep mode » thereby ensuring quicker wake-up times. Even if devices don’t have a sleep mode, it is sometimes useful to send regular pings, to keep these devices’ network connections happy.

USEFUL FEATURE

ACTIVITY
MONITORS

The Cortex unit’s Activity Monitors can check any input (even GET inputs from external SNMP devices) for activity, lack of activity, length of activity, or cumulated activity. In a networking context, this sophisticated monitoring function can be used to detect anomalies and automatically reset suspect equipment.

USEFUL FEATURE

EVENT
COUNTERS

Event Counters are Up/Down & resettable counters that can be used to count actions or to pre-set the number of times a specific action is to be undertaken. For example, if a Cortex detects that a particular network router needs to be reset, the counter can allow 3 retries of this reset operation, and then decide that the router is defective and requires more advanced attention.
